Cañambú is the bamboo cane that grows, sometimes three meters high, in enormous bushes in eastern Cuba and it has nothing to do with the caña that is crushed into sugar. The band Cañambú uses this type of bamboo to build all their music instruments.
"We played Son campestre, with that special country touch" remembered in 2003 one of the founders of Cañambú, Arístides Ruiz Boza, the former singer and main composer of the band and who unfortunately passed away since. Arístides style of singing was unusual within Cuban Son although it seems to be typical of the small town of San Luis. Several vocalists from this village have a similar, high-pitched style, also adopted by Ramon Suarez Isac, the talented new singer of the band, also winner of the prestigious "Festival del Son de Santiago de Cuba, 2006".

Cañambú now plays in festivals all over Cuba and, as the island´s only bamboo band, have become something of a legend. In spring 2008, they made their first Europe tour, especially to Switzerland with outstanding success as they came back to Switzerland in December 2008 already...
